On the drive that I’m working on, the laser will light up, and when I load both game and movie discs it will spin for 1-2 seconds then stop and say, “Open Tray.” I have the drive open right now, and I’ve already cleaned the laser with rubbing alcohol and a couple cotton swabs, but that didn’t fix it. I also blew out the drive thoroughly, and manually removed some dog hairs that had accumulated in the drive. So far I’ve had no luck figuring this one out. I just tried manually re-positioning the laser, but it just goes back to its normal spot near the spindle motor every time. I’ll order a new laser, but hopefully I can do this without one.
You will probably need a whole new DVD drive Be careful with this, the 360 drives were keyed to each motherboard, thus you need to solder the old board in the new drive, so it may have that issue for you, don’t know about a 360 S yet, i may test this on a 360S if i get a dead one given to me and reflow and use a unmodified DVD drive, see if sees the drive You should try the laser first, so you can try and get it working without soldering the old board in the new drive I would strongly recommend swapping controller boards so you don’t get banned from xbox live and it sees the drive is different from what is coded in the firmware
More than likely, it just needs the laser replaced. This has been the case for 99% of the consoles I have repaired. There will be times when it is more than the laser, but for a few bucks you can start with replacing the laser.
