In the last few days my MacBook Pro (15") runs for about 10 or 15 mins then the entire screen gets jittery and freezes up solid with odd colors and patterns requiring me to force restart. I suspect a defective logic board ($599) and think I would like to attempt the repair. But I would like to be sure it is the logic board before I try. Another symptom is that I can start up in Safe Mode and generally runs without a problem but of course it is limited in what I can do. That sort of suggests to me maybe it is something else other than the mother board. Anyway, there must be a diagnostic method that will isolate the problem and I hope someone can lead me down the correct path. Except for this problem it is a beautiful day. Update The last three of the serial # are 1XR. I will down load that program and let you know asap. Thanks
This really sounds like the Nvidia 8600 GPU issue. We need that serial number to check it. Apple was replacing these logic boards for free but that program has run its curse and they may no longer do it. Rather than putting in a new logic board yourself, Apple does offer a “flat rate”, repair that runs about $285 plus shipping and will replace the logic board for you. To test the GPU, hook it up to an external monitor and see if you get the same results.
The replacement program is still up and running.
Anyone know if this is still something ape is doing my monitor is doing the same thing and won’t boot just, gets the apple logo with the squiggly lines and random colors but then pops the little window that say you need to restart the computer but keeps doing the same thing when restart.
