I have an iPhone 8, and the lightning port was no longer holding cables that had been plugged in firmly. I have successfully done repairs on cellphones (including older model iphones) in the past so I ordered an aftermarket replacement lightning port and replaced it earlier today. As far as I can tell, everything has been replaced correctly, and all connectors are attached correctly. Everything works except the home button. I can’t for the life of me figure out why that might be. The entire front panel/screen assembly itself was basically untouched during the repair - I did not remove a single screw from the screen assembly, it just sat off to the side. The screen itself is 100% functional - I’m having no issues with the digitizer in any section of the screen and it’s response time is the same as normal. Similarly, the connector for the home button appears to be seated correctly. Nudging it lightly with my spudger suggests it’s firmly seated, it doesn’t move much at all. Any ideas what the problem could be/how I might fix it? I wasn’t planning on replacing this phone any time soon.

I think you would find that the home button flex cable on the screen has been damaged when you removed or installed the screen. A tiny tear is all it takes. Sometimes I have to put them under a microscope to see the tear. I think a screen replacement is your best option.
