Chosen Solution

I have replaced the screen on a relatives iPhone 8 plus. I turned the device on before pushing the screen completely back into place and everything worked fine. When I push the screen back into place the home button stops working, no taptic feedback. If I lift the screen slightly off the home button starts to work again! Any ideas?

You would need to check your home button flex cable first, the one that is attached to the screen. Look under a magnifying glass to see if there is a slight tear.  If it is not the flex cable it will be a component on the home button assembly. This would require a reputable repair shop to fix the problem. The only other solution would be a screen replacement by apple.
