So the CPU fan on my laptop is starting to die, and I want to replace it however it seems that the heatsink is attached to the fan without screws, but with glue or something (can’t tell, all I know is it’s not by screws). Do I need to unscrew the metal top from the fan, buy a new fan, take off the metal top on that fan, then screw the fan onto the metal top attached to the heatsink?

(I was thinking thats what I would be able to do after looking at this image) The specific laptop I’m working on is the MSI GL62M 7REX.

No I figured it out, the fans heat pipes are attached to the top metal casing of the fan, and I just had to unscrew the metal casing from the top of the fan to free it. Doing so I also found out that it wasn’t the fan that was the problem, but that it was a ton of dust and other crap build up inside the heat sink fins blocking airflow.

That is not glue, it’s thermal paste (probably dried hard). Here’s a video on removing it and replacing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOd1oN1w
