Hello, Found description of above symptom as faulty logic board. Ordered one, just proceeded to the swap… Same symptom. I get the silvery Apple against black backdrop, hard drive wheezes as if starting but screen goes back off and then silvery Apple again etc, etc… Would it be the hard drive itself ? Is it dead ? Is there a way to force a real start ? Thanks. PFH
Here’s how to install it: Here’s the specs: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ip… Here’s the installation guide: iPod 5th Generation (Video) Hard Drive Replacement It uses a 1.8" Zif drive Here are standaRD DRIVES: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi… Here’s the SSD it uses: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDA…
From what I can tell, the hard drive is broken. If you can, replace it with a 30 or 60 GB 1.8" ZIF hard drive (80 GB may or may not work, depending on if you have a logic board with 32 or 64 MB of RAM. To be safe, we’re staying away from the 80 GB drive), the only problem being that you would have to re-install the firmware for your iPod, which might probably be difficult for you (depends). You can find out how to take your iPod apart here. Once you replace the drive, here is a video that will show you how to reinstall the firmware. Here’s a link that may also help: How do I reinstall firmware on my iPod 5th Generation Video classic? Here is a link to download all (I think) of the iPod firmware versions. Good Luck!
