Research has it down as a WD Black the only new one i can find to replace it is a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black 3.5" Hard Disk Drive WD1002FAEX.. will the new hdd work in the imac ..? Btw im thinking of putting in an SSD in as well the spec is an - OCZ Vertex Plus 240GB SATA II 2.5 inch Solid State Drive OCZSSD2-1VTXPL240G can this work ? kind regards andy

Yes, you can replace the HD with the same 1TB HD from WD or use a newer cheaper model from WD or Seagate. The very newest versions of these drives implement Apples thermo spec of SMART (Apple does not use an external sensor on the newer models). Even if you get a non-conforming HD you still can get it to work with the addition of a third party system add-on Fan Control that works with other thermo sensor SMART spec’ed HD’s and non-SMART disks as well. I would recommend getting Temperature Gauge app from the App Store to monitor your sensors and fans as well. I would recommend getting the 2nd HD/SSD mounting kit from iFixIt for your system to mount your SSD to using the second HD/SSD SATA interface your system has so you don’t need to swap out the optical drive. Make sure the SSD you buy is rated for your system some don’t have a means to be set for the correct SATA I/O speed.
