I get the file folder w/ question mark at start up. Set-up disk and disk utility doesn’t show the HD. Can I ever get the info off of it? How can it ever be read?

Thats not good ;-{ You could try a better tool like: ProSoft Data Rescue. But too has its limits on what it can recover. You may end up needing a new drive. Can you give us some more details on what happened.
