Chosen Solution

The optical drive is making grinding noises. It did eject the disc inside but the door will no longer open to take a new disc. Am I looking at replacing the drive and the motherboard? The console boots up fine and seems to work otherwise. I bought it from an ebay retailer and is not under waranty, I suppose.

First of all if the console came like this you can get your money back. Just open a “not as described” case with Ebay. The seller will basically be forced to take the item back even if there is no warranty. Secondly, yes, you will need a new optical drive. This one is broken inside and I have not found a way to fix them as of yet. If you decide to buy another one be sure that you have the original PCB daughterboard that came on the optical drive originally. The original board that came on the optical drive is married to the motherboard inside the PS4 and cannot be mismatched or the drive will not work. I hope this helps.
