Mac Pro Dual 2.0 GHz 3GB RAM 320 HD This one has had me busy for a couple of days. Came in with three blinking lights on the power button and kernel panic on start up. After testing for an hour it would not boot at all. The machine had two 1 GB sticks and four 256 sticks. After extensive testing I found all the sticks were fried. Replaced RAM with two good 256 sticks of my own. Switched hard drive to a known good system and it booted to the kernel panic screen again. After testing for another hour it fried my RAM and I get no boot. I ask this question because I don’t know if the power supply might be involved and I don’t want to replace the motherboard just to have it fried again. I haven’t seen a machine that keeps frying RAM before. Suggestions?
Don’t know why Fried RAM and Toasted Board sound so appetising? perhaps i am just hungry! Hi Mayer, Yes, i have come across a Computer (server in fact) frying RAM chips. It was a HP ML130G5, the problem was in fact the power supply. I had my workshop guys test the Power Supply and it had a few blown capacitors, this was causing over-voltage spikes. The surges were running down the RAM Rails and frying the chips! I would replace the power supply as soon as possible mate as turning it on and off with the supply in it’s current state could be slowly damaging the other components such as the CPU. I am just stating that this was my problem and that’s how i fixed it, could be a completely separate problem for you though. If you do get it replaced and it works i’ll be happy as RAM frying is an expensive game :) James.
