Lady Tech, I’m having a similar issue. I have cleaned the coils, freezer began to work well again, but three days later it has stopped cooling. Both times, I hear the clicking that you mentioned. What is that?

Darrenkim, the clicking is the overload thermal cut off for the compressor. It the compressor is too hot or pulling to many amps the OTC will switch off to stop voltage to the compressor. It does this to protect the compressor from overheating. Problem is, most people don’t hear this clicking until it’s already damaged. If your coils were dirty, the air flow was restricted. This causes the compressor to overheat, the refrigerant will get hot and this all causes stress on copper lines. You could try replacing the compressor relay. That’s the relay and OTC mounted on the side of the compress. I have had a few bad relays. If your lucky, that’s the problem. Otherwise. the issue is in the sealed system. You’ll need to tap the system to check pressures and only a qualified, and EPA certified technician can do that. Cleaning the coils needs to be done at least one every year, more often if you have pets. Think of it as an oil change. It has to be done or it can cause serious and expensive repairs.
