The IMac initiates boots / with chime and all, but it shows vertical lines and gets stuck on the Apple logo until it freezes. I have tried all resets combination found online, still no luck. If I try booting with the option key to select USB drive or hard drive…I can see them ( still with vertical lines ) and after selecting either or it looks like it is going to start but then freezes. While checking cable connections, I notice behind the screen panel was extremely hot, so Im assuming the Imac it is self shutting ifself down. I am wondering should I keep trying to fix it or mod it all together removing the logic boards and guts and modding it with a small mini-itx board that could support i7 cpu’s. Anyone else here had any experience doing such mods? I read somewhere in this forum, that the Imac 24" screen is made by NEC and they made same monitor size for PC’s, maybe buy and old monitor and use instead? Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated. Also….all 4 diagnostic led lights are on

It sounds like the display is gone. Do you have access to an external monitor? If you do see if you get a clean image on it when you boot up after letting it sit to cool down. Do you see a clean image before the system shuts down? If you have a second Mac you could also try starting your system up in Target mode connected to your second Mac see if you can access the HD. As to converting your system its not designed for a ATX board, you really can mod it. Sorry
