Chosen Solution

So recently I had my phone dropped in a basin while water was running fro the tap. It hardly stayed 2-4” before I took it out and dried it. As it turns out the water went in disabling Face ID didn’t got in through the earpiece as I initially thought but through a bum on the upper stainless steel bezel connection with the antenna line… The phone was never dropped or had any shock of any kind so I am wondering if that is a known design issue or I was just unlucky because I am pretty sure that the damage caused by it won’t be covered from the warranty. Talking to an ASP they told me a clean up on the sensors might save me from a replacement (any ideas what are the chances by doing that, because I thing that only one of the sensors is not working…) otherwise i have to pay a whooping 799€ ($904.97). Any other solutions or any sort of advise would be really appreciated…. PS.: I guess this is the reward from apple when buying a flagship device tie Face ID with T2 so repair isn’t possible!

The sensors for face ID (including the front-facing camera) are on the “dip” on the front screen that surrounds the speaker. So water in the top of the phone is indeed a likely culprit. IF the water is in front of those sensors (given that they are infrared light based, and water is a poor transmitter of infrared light), then a cleanup could do the trick. Ask them what they mean by cleanup, including price.

It’s absolutely not covered by warranty, it’s explicitly stated that it isn’t. However, some of the Apple Store employees are willing to listen, and as you said, I feel like you could have a decent chance of getting this replaced. However, if it isn’t, I don’t know what to tell you, other than to make sure you do everything to dry it out or clean the sensor. Good luck!

My iphone have the same problem also after I dropped it in water the volume down not working , 3D touch works every time i touch the screen and the phone puts him self on mute every time i unmute it if anyone can tell what i can do or what worth more buying new one or fixing this

mine went in like 2 inches of water, face id died, later the screen went all green and glitchy, then 2 green lines apeared and then kept getting dimmer. Apple said it was my fault and made me pay $800 CAD for a new one. Now my back glass is broken from a 2 foot fall. And its in a lifeproof fre. Like wtf is going on. Stop making ur &&^&^$^ phones in china u cheap &&^&*. Also if anyone has a link to a good oem back glass for the max pls send me the link.

Judging by what we have learned during the teardown of Face ID, main circuits of the Face ID are exposed. Once water damaged or exposed to a relatively humid environment, there might be electricity leakage or short-circuit problem that can result in Face ID failure. You need to be really careful with iPhone X and above!!! Why Face ID Not Working After Repair
