Hi, The proximity sensor and ear piece aren’t working on my iphone3. I’v replaced the assembly with one from an old iphone and connected up connector 3 several times but its still not working. My next thought is that it is the headphone jack that is the problem, headphones work fine. I was just wondering if there is a way of working out if it is the connector 3 assembly that is the problem or the headphone jack? I don’t really want to buy and replaced the headphone jack if its not what’s causing the problem.
If it is in headphone mode, you can just click up or down on the volume and it will state whether your headphones are plugged in or not. If your #3 connector is not visibly damaged then it is your #3 ribbon. I know that you said you replaced that and dont have any reason to believe that it is the case, but trust me when I say this… it is the ribbon. The ribbon can look brand new, and still not work. I keep on hand a lot of ribbons because of this, they are easily damaged, and many are defective. If you put in a known working one (from another phone) and it still doesnt work, then it is the connector. Somehow the pins inside could have lifted, I’ve seen it before when diagnosing customer’s phones. You would then need to have a professional replace the connector. I’ve done more than enough of these to know that you can go through 5 ribbons and have all 5 be defective. And 1 pin lifted can cause the ear piece or proximity sensor to not work. You almost have to look under the scope to see it.
You are describing problems of a bad Flex Cable #3. But could also be that you damaged the #3 Connector on the Logic Board. First step would be to trouble shoot Flex Cable #3 by trying new cable or known working one.
