Someone else’s computer. I have never seen it boot. After an SMC reset, it displays the battery icon with the red bar in it, then goes dark. Or, it boots long enough for the progress bar to go half way under the white apple before it goes dark. I’ve only heard a startup chime once, on dozens of attempted boots. Requires another SMC reset to do anything at all. Opened it up and the battery is ballooning. Before they spend money for a replacement battery, I want to make sure it boots at all. Disconnected the battery & blew the dust and hair out. Bottom case still removed, and open computer sitting on right edge. SMC reset - power light changes color.Power key - nothing - stone dead.Reconnect battery - occasional partial function, as above.Disconnect battery - stone dead. Only the battery looks wrong - everything else appears to be connected correctly, no coffee spills, nothing obviously charred. This thing should boot with the battery removed, right?
Yes, I tried the full power-down. Yes, the light was amber, and it switched to green briefly after the SMC reset. The problem appears to have been with the MagSafe2 adapter that I’ve been using. Both of the 85W MagSafe1 power supplies that I tried power up older MacBook Pros (including my personal last-model 17”), but will not power up this 13” through the adapter. I made sure that all five pins are free of debris clinging to the magnet, and tickled the pins on the adapter and the power supply to make sure that the springs aren’t hung up. The power supply delivered with the laptop is really ratty, and has bare shielding and electrical tape, so I elected not to use it. This morning I gave it a try, and the MBP booted right up. The MagSafe I-II adapter has had no problems before - I’ve used it many times. Thanks for the answer. My friend needs to get a new battery and a non-shredded power supply.
Lets give this a try: With the MagSafe and battery disconnected, press the power key a good 15 sec’s. Now plug in the MagSafe charger the system should spontaneously start did it? If not are you using the correct charger for the system was the MagSafe LED Amber?
