The iPad dropped from my knee only a short distance onto my foot, but the screen is completely black and won’t turn on. I tried connecting it to the charger and it made the ‘ping’ sounds, so is not completely dead. I’ve tried tapping it on the back but it didn’t work. Is there anything I try before I send it away?

give it a good smack on the back side, right of the apple logo. its were the connector is inside.
I would check if the lcd connector needs reseated or if the lcd broke. But first try holding the home and power buttons for about 10-15 seconds then try turning it on. worst case is you broke the LCD which is not bad
If the percussive maintenance doesn’t work you will have to open up the iPad and reseat the lcd cable. You will need to power off the iPad before opening it up. Just hold the power button for 6 seconds then swipe approximately where the swipe to power off option would be.
