02 Yamaha G16A Freshly overhauled engine. Now it may idle a bit but the quits, will not gain rpm unless choke is applied. Air filter, gas lines and carburetor are all new or cleaned. What else do I need to look at?

Dwight Coleman there are usually only a few possibilities if it only runs with the choke. One cause could be an air leak on the carb, head gasket, crankshaft seal. The other could be a clogged low speed and idle circuit. Since you just got the engine done I would double check the carburetor. You do want to make sure that it is set right and that it is clean. Check everything properly again and check for airleaks….

Dwight check for a leak around the base of the carb . Make sure the gasket seated properly and that its torqued down properly. Use a propane torch to check for vacuum leaks around the carb . Don’t light it just turn on the gas and move it slowly around the seams of the carb with the motor running . When the motor speeds up you found your leak. Hope this helps

You 1989 Evinrude 150 xp with muff on it idles ok a little sneezing. In the water it doesn’t want to idle when in gear . From idle to plane the boat will bog down unless I choke it once it planes it runs great. I have rebuilt the 3 carbs and made sure each passage was not restricted.

Mine goes ok untill i stop for a while, then wont go properly unless i push choke in and out a couple of times, then it takes off again
