GE Over-the-stove Microwave JVM1950DR1CC Please help settle a marital fight. I tell my wife to turn on the microwave exhaust fan while cooking greasy items (bacon) in the microwave to send the greasy steam to the outside (vented to the outdoors). My dear wife claims that the microwave exhaust fan only expels the air from below the microwave oven; the stovetop and oven air only, and does nothing from the inside of the microwave. Does the microwave expel air while it is cooking without pressing the “fan” button? Can you tell me who is right?

Hi, All over-the-range microwaves have an automatic fan feature to help protect the electronic components as well as help the cooking area get rid of excess heat. The built-in thermostat automatically turns the vent fan on if the unit is too hot and will not turn off until the microwave is cool again. The ventilation fan at the top and there’s a cooling fan lower down in the body of the oven. The cooling fan automatically comes on during operation to cool the microwave oven. The vent fan may also be used to remove odor, moisture and smoke while the cooktop below is being used. Here’s a link to the parts for your model. Part #9 is the cooling fan and part #47 is the ventilation motor (fan)
