The screen on my Vizio D50u-D1 went black a few days ago. Sound went off too. This strange purple ring has now appeared in the lower right corner (when facing the tv). It’s made up of tiny dots. Can I post a photo? We removed the back and all boards look fine as do capacitors and the only fuse we see. I went up and down the source list using the old remote and suddenly got sound but then lost it when I hit the channel button? The screen went black while I had the old remote in my hand. Could it possibly just be a messed up remote setting or something I did while it was in my hand. The remote was pretty much falling apart from falling off my desk so many times so I’m wondering if it’s the cause. I purchased a new remote and now the tv screen has backlight and the purple ring. It’s not a spot! It’s a perfect ring made up of tiny purple dots. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! UPDATE: I received your response oldturkey. Thank you SO MUCH for helping me. Here’s a photo of the ring. I can post photos of the boards if that will help.

I contacted Vizio directly. Sent them photos etc and copy of my receipt. TV was 2.5 years old when this occurred so no warranty and they do not stand behind their products. They told me it’s a “panel defect” and repairs would be “uneconomical.” Panel “defect” to me means I purchased the TV with a defective part(s) that wouldn’t last. They saw the purple ring so they knew it was not a board issue that can be fixed for $30. I asked and he said no, it would cost more to fix this issue than buying a new TV. Vizio is well aware of the ‘black screen’ issues with their TVs but they DO NOT CARE! I won’t even get into the conversation I had with a guy calling himself “Francis” at Vizio because I’m still livid. I asked him “How long should smart tv’s last?” and he REFUSED to answer the question obviously because it would make the company he works for look bad. So after dealing with this nightmare all I can say is DO NOT EVER, EVER, EVER BUY A VIZIO TV because they don’t even last 2.5 years with normal (5-6 hours per day) use. I have read HUNDREDS of stories just like mine. You’re watching a show. Everything is good and then BOOM, screen goes black. TV is toast. It doesn’t even start to go bad! It just goes. Done. I own 2 M Class 60" curved Samsung tv’s that are phenomenal and I will be buying a 3rd. Stay away from Vizio! Their tv’s are trash, they KNOW FULL WELL they’re defective but they don’t care. “Francis” from Vizio actually told me that the issue with my TV is “on you maam.” THAT is what he said to me! That the “panel defect” issue with my TV is my fault and my problem! Like I said, DON’T buy Vizio. Their TVs are horrible and their customer care/consideration/respect is just as ugly!

@kimtr it sounds like this could be related to the backlight LED’s or the panel. You do want to go ahead and post some pictures of what it looks like with your question. For that use this guide Adding images to an existing question It will allow us to see what you see.

Yeah Brandon K, tell your parents to hang onto that receipt for that Samsung they are the biggest pieces of trash that’s ever been created TVs first refrigerators tied for second biggest losers in Samsung products trash absolute garbage! Vizio M Series was/is actually a very good TV. Despite having the same problem described above with the round purple/opaque circle No picture and it looks like they described a pebble or a rock came up and shattered it you can see light coming through it and when I rub my finger up against it actually looks like it’s cracked but nothing happened to it. I live alone and I’m 63 nothing happened to the TV. My guess is some component inside basically exploded or fried and caused the damage to the screen. But for the money I can’t complain $450 for this 50 inch TV I have it’s a great picture I’ve had about about Four years. Not a bad run for the price so I can’t complain and I use my TV a lot! So it sucks but the worst part is that there was like no warning it just literally didn’t work anymore I tried all the repowering and all the other test options they give you described and came to the realization when I found this post that this is a common problem with the TVs when that component goes…You’re done! And for the price of a comparable TV it’s not worth it to repair I can already say I know that for a fact without calling anybody and I really after three for five years without an extended warranty would not expect the company to do anything. Stuff breaks unless you’re buying top of the line I mean top-of-the-line Sony’s for four times the price then you would have a legitimate complaint. I’ll buy another Visio, I’ll buy it from Costco with my Costco credit card so I’ll get a double the warranty and then I’ll also get the extended warranty so if anything happens I’ll be double covered.
