I’m replacing an iPhone 6s screen and I cannot remove the backing plate that goes to the back of the lcd digitizer. Is that important or no?

It serves as a heat shield to protect the LCD. If you don’t install it, over time the quality of the LCD may degrade due to the heat generated by the logic board. Ideally it should be re-installed.
