I replaced the display on the iMac and when I reconnected everything I noticed a flicker on the screen and that the display was not a bright as the previous one. After a day or so the display went black and did not come back on. I figured that there was a loose cable, but when I reopened the unit everything was secure. I powered up the unit as a test and found that the display flickered when it was lowered into place. I soon realised that every time I moved the display up and down or touched the display power cable, the screen goes out. I can’t see any damage to the connector on the motherboard. The display power cable end and sheath seem fine, no obvious damage. Because I can only recreate the problem by touching the connector end of the cable I don’t think the display itself is bad. And like I said, the motherboard connector seems fine also. Can I get a tv repair guy to swap this connector with the one from the old display, and should the spliced cable be soldered? Finally, would soldering cause any damage to the screen or would the heat dissipate before it can get to any of the components in the display? Thanks for any help you can give.
Hi @danj I was able to resolve the issue. I discovered that the display power cable plugs into the base of the display in the bottom left and right-hand corners (I uploaded photos). Once I pulled back the tape and saw this, I swapped the cable from the bad display with the suspect cable from the replacement display. There is no more flickering or black-outs and the screen is actually brighter. Thanks again for your calm and measured advice. Take care. And cheers.
