My early 2015 13” Retina MacBook Pro is unable to turn on without a power adapter. When I click the battery icon it says service recommended, however when I went to the Apple store and they tried to run diagnostics, my Mac would freeze. Even when I try to run diagnostics at home my Mac freezes almost immediately (they concluded there is a faulty logic board, however they did not even look inside). The mac seems to be working fine in Mac OS except when it is given a high load, it will shut off. After further testing with GeekBench, I have come to the idea that the GPU is bad as it is able to go through the GeekBench CPU test with no struggles, however a few seconds after I start the GPU test it shuts off. Similarly it shuts off when I run the Unigine Heaven GPU benchmark. The battery worked fine a few weeks ago, I just want to confirm that this is indeed a logic board issue as diagnostics was working fine when I had the battery issue a week before my Apple appointment. Thanks for the help
Your GPU issue is a bit of a killer ;-{ I would start off getting a good thermal management app like TG Pro it will allow you to see what’s happing with your thermals and fan. If you get the full version it might nail down what is failing in the graphics services with its diagnostics. Do keep in mind this model uses the intergraded graphics services within the CPU (the 15” models offer a discreet GPU) You might want to try to clean the old thermal paste off and apply a fresh coat. Sometimes it’s the heat build up that does you in. You may also have a VRM issue so the power to the CPU is not stable. This might be repairable. Update (08/07/2020) Well, I’ve got some good news for you! Your battery has failed, thats why when you pushed your system hard it was failing. as the MagSafe charger is not able to support the full power load you where expecting when you ran the tests. Here’s the need part MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015) Battery and here’s the guide to put it in: MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015 Battery Replacement So keep this in mind when you visit the Apple Store as you don’t have a logic board issue at all! While I do recommend re-pasting the CPU (every five years is a good time) that is not the issue here.
