My iMac took a fall and now is totally dead. No response when I try to power up. It landed on its back after being hit in the screen. Where do I start to troubleshoot? I replaced the power cord
You might have damaged the logic board, or power supply in the impact, these are the most likely components to be damaged in a fall thet can result in the machine not booting. if you are willing to open your iMac, you should try and inspect these parts for visable damage. also, an impact like that, almost certianly killed the hard drive, so even though it shouldn’t stop the machine from booting, it will most likely need to be replaced.
does the screen not even light up? do you hear any chimes when you try to start it up? are you willing to try opening it yourself? there’s not much other debugging you can do at this point if it doesn’t even power up, I would think, without looking inside. If lucky, perhaps just some connection has come loose, but on the other hand the fall may have physically damaged something serious like the logic board. no way to easily tell from outside if there’s not even the slightest sign of life when you try to power on. the repair guide for your model should be here, assuming it’s identified it on the right
You need to open it up and take a look- you may get lucky and just see a cable is loose, but you’ll probably come across broken/damaged parts, loose cables, and parts in the wrong place if it got shaken about.
most likely the hdd is now broken…. you can always take ur mac to the mac gallery the is near you and have them check it out…..they will do it for free…..when you know what’s wrong you can come back here…
